Hulu is closing a deal for The Dropout, a limited series starring and executive produced by Kate McKinnon based on ABC News/ABC Radio’s podcast about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company, Theranos. Emmy-winning Saturday Night Live star McKinnon will play the disgraced wunderkind entrepreneur Holmes and will executive produce the limited drama series, whose length is expected to be between 6-10 episodes.”

Under the agreement with Discovery, HGTV, Food Network, and TLC channels are now available to YouTube TV subscribers. Other Discovery-owned channels coming to the service include The Discovery Channel, Investigation Discovery, Animal Planet, OWN, Travel Channel, and MotorTrend. Discovery’s content will also be made available through YouTube TV’s video-on-demand service.”

Discovery unveiled its 2019-2020 programming slate at its upfront presentation Wednesday in New York. Highlights include an expansion of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé franchise and a revival of one of its signature shows from the 2000s, What Not To Wear, along with new Discovery Channel series Wildlife Warriors (wt), Perfect Planet (wt), Mysterious Planet (wt), Serengeti, Rob Riggle: Global Investigator (wt), Legends of the Wild and River Of No Return, the return of Food Network’s Good Eats and more.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, “[a] day before Disney shares its plans to investors for its streaming service, Disney+ on Wednesday unveiled a robust slate of 10 unscripted series for the forthcoming direct-to-consumer platform, including a pair of Marvel shows.

“What's more, Disney+ has also announced its first overall deal — with Supper Club, the team comprised of David Gelb, Brian McGinn and Jason Sterman and which produced the Netflix breakout Chef's Table.

“The Supper Club trio will produce two of the 10 food, travel and lifestyle shows for Disney+: Marvel's 616, an anthological docuseries set at the intersection of the comic giant's stories, characters and creators and everyday people; and Earthkeepers, which puts the spotlight on conservationists. The trio will also create and develop content for all Disney platforms.

“Joining the slate are the Disney-themed cooking show Be Our Chef; the anthology Cinema Relics: Iconic Art of the Movies; the Kristen Bell-produced musical theater/reunion effort Encore!; the kid-focused feel-good series Marvel's Hero Project; the family therapy show (Re)Connect; the travel guide Rogue Trip; the competition foray Shop Class; and an untitled docuseries focused on Walt Disney Imagineering, which chronicles the people behind the attractions at Disney's parks worldwide with never-before-seen footage. 

“The slate further illustrates speculation that Disney+ would feature originals geared toward family co-viewing with edgier fare living on other platforms. That was the case with the Zoe Kravitz-led reboot of High Fidelity,which was developed for Disney+ but moved to Hulu earlier this week. (Disney now owns a majority stake in Hulu after acquiring Fox's share of the streamer.)

“Disney+ is expected to launch in the fourth quarter with a slate of originals that includes content from assets including Lucasfilm (Star Wars), Marvel and Pixar, as well as library fare from new corporate siblings FX and National Geographic joining ABC, Freeform and Disney Channel. In a release announcing the unscripted slate Wednesday, Disney noted that the platform's programming roster would ‘allow viewers to find the ethos of Disney in everyday stories, inspiring hope and sparking the curiosity of audiences of all ages.’

“In terms of the exclusive overall deal with Supper Club, Disney+ senior vp content Agnes Chu said the trio would ‘be a crucial, creative force’ for Disney+ as it ‘build[s] a platform for compelling, personal and authentic programming.’ The pact marks Disney+'s entry into the super-competitive overall deals space, which was ignited after Netflix signed Shonda Rhimes to a $100 million overall deal after the Grey's Anatomy creator had time remaining on her pact with Disney-owned ABC Studios (her home of 15 years). Friction between Netflix and Disney has escalated over the past couple years after the streamer poached both talent and executives. (Netflix most recently inked yet another key creative away from Disney Channel after seeing former ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey depart for a content job with the streamer and showrunners like Kenya Barris also jump ship.)

“Additional details about Disney+ plans are expected to be revealed Thursday afternoon during an investor presentation in Burbank. A slew of announcements are expected to come in both the lead-up to the webcast event as well as during the unveiling. Details still to be revealed include a price point, a formal launch date and just how its initial content offerings will be released. Also of interest is how Disney plans to bundle its multiple streaming platforms, including Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, with new assets including FX Now.

Marvel's 616 (working title) is an anthological documentary series exploring the intersection between Marvel's rich legacy of stories, characters and creators and the world outside your window. Told through the lens of a diverse group of filmmakers, each doc will dive into the rich historical, cultural and societal context that has become inseparable from stories of the Marvel Universe. The series is produced by Marvel New Media in partnership with Supper Club, and executive produced by Joe Quesada, Stephen Wacker, Shane Rahmani, John Cerilli, Harry Go and Sarah Amos for Marvel and David Gelb, Brian McGinn and Jason Sterman for Supper Club.

Earthkeepers (working title) is from the award-winning creators of Chef's Table and the producers of One Lucky Elephant. It is a cinematic documentary series that centers on the adventurous lives of the people changing the way we see the animal kingdom. The episodes focus on conservationists and the animals they've devoted their career to studying, diving deep into the personal trials and professional breakthroughs of protecting the planet's most endangered species. The series is executive produced by Brian McGinn, Jason Sterman and David Gelb for Supper Club and Cristina Colissimo and Jordana Glick-Franzheim for Wellworth Pictures.

Be Our Chef asks the question: What if your family had the chance to create the next great Disney Parks dish? Hosted by Angela Kinsey (The Office), Be Our Chef invites families from diverse backgrounds to join a positive and playful Disney-inspired cooking competition at Walt Disney World. In each episode, two families will participate in a themed challenge based on their family traditions and the magic of Disney. The finalists will apply what they have learned to create a dish that represents their family through a Disney lens. The winner's magical food creation will become a signature dish or treat served at Walt Disney World. Be Our Chef is produced by INE Entertainment, with Eric Day and Mark Koops serving as producers.

Per Deadline, “[f]ormer Fixer Upper co-hosts Chip and Joanna Gaines, whose Waco-based Magnolia is a fast-rising lifestyle power, took the stage at Discovery’s upfront Wednesday evening to celebrate their newly minted joint venture.

“Discovery CEO David Zaslav laid it on thick in his introduction, comparing the duo to Discovery partners such as Oprah Winfrey and Tiger Woods in terms of their appeal to viewers. He also invoked Julia Child’s impact on home cooking and the even broader legacy of Martha Stewart.

“‘They will change people’s lives,’ Zaslav said during the company’s upfront presentation to media buyers at New York’s Alice Tully Hall. ‘When I found out they had left HGTV, I couldn’t breathe. It took all of the air out of my lungs.’ Discovery’s $14.6 billion acquisition of HGTV parent Scripps Networks Interactive closed about a year ago, following an announcement from the Gaineses that they were taking a break from television.

“During that interregnum and while the regulatory review of the merger was concluding, Zaslav said he awoke one morning at 3AM for a flight from Las Vegas to the Gaines base in Waco, Texas, for a pitch meeting. ‘When you see them on the screen, you want to grab the remote and un-mute the TV because you want to hear what they have to say,’ he explained.

“In addition to rebranding former Scripps network DIY, plans call for a range of streaming programs, including an eventual subscription service. But Chip Gaines said the pair responded most to the enthusiasm of Zaslav, a former NBC sales executive known for being able to sell sand in the desert.

“‘We’ve got this bromance going on, David and I,’ Chip Gaines said during a rambling, five-minute speech punctuated by numerous references to the couple’s 9-month-old baby boy and five kids overall. He saluted Zaslav’s passion for mapping out a business plan, which will see the couple take over the DIY network in summer 2020.

“‘If we can make it, anybody can make it. If a couple from Waco, Texas can be in New York with all of you, then anyone can do it,” Gaines said. “And our network is going to deliver those kinds of stories.’

“No programming details were revealed during the presentation, whose main purpose appeared to be to unveil the teaming and signal to media buyers the potential value down the line. Joanna Gaines, apart from an amusing interjection urging her husband to wrap up his discursive remarks, did not address the crowd.”

From TheWrap: “It’s been ten years since DJ ‘Pauly D’ DelVecchio and Vinny Guadagnino became overnight sensations on Jersey Shore, and so far the closest thing they’ve come to true love is… each other.

“On the eve of their new MTV dating show Double Shot at Love with DJ Pauly D and Vinny, the original GTLers talked about needing haircuts at least every three days, the duck phone, and how tired they are of meaningless hookups. They also talked about what they would do if they fell for the same woman on the show.

“‘My love for Pauly is stronger than our love would ever be for another girl,’ Vinny said. ‘I’m so close with him that I would be like, “Yo, you like that person? She’s all yours.” I would never feel selfish. And he feels the same way.’

“Would Pauly D do the same for him? ‘Most likely,’ he said.

“And they say you should never fall in love at the Jersey Shore.

“The real-life best friends ditched Seaside Heights for Los Angeles for the show, which premieres with two back-to-back, commercial-free episodes Thursday. The bachelors will live in a tricked-out mansion with 20 eligible women — none of whom are named Snooki or JWoww. They will take part in a comically complicated competition in which they aren’t told which celebrity they’ll be dating until they move into the house. One woman hopes the celebrity isn’t Post Malone — another woman hopes it is.

“‘They were talking about Post Malone, Kodak Black and Soulja Boy and all these things, and I’m like, if these women are expecting those guys and me and Pauly walk out, they’re in for a real surprise,’ Vinny said.

“Veteran producer SallyAnn Salsano, who also guided the original 2009 Jersey Shore and Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, returns to guide the new show.

“Since the early days of the Shore, 38-year-old Pauly D and 31-year-old Vinny have done some growing up — I can report that the word ‘guido’ was not once uttered at any point in our conversations, and I’m pretty positive I didn’t hear the sound of fist pumping over the phone, but I can’t be sure.

“Pauly D was clear that when they began filming, he was, in fact, ‘100% looking for love.’

“Vinny may have been a little more skeptical at first — the way he sees love, ‘if it comes, it comes’ — but one thing is for sure.

“‘I’m over the one-night stands,’ Vinny said. ‘They really do nothing for me, and most of the time I’m out in a club now, I come home and I just go to bed by myself. I’m like damn, I wish I had someone meaningful to share this with.’

:Pauly D echoed Vinny’s sentiments. ‘Jersey Shore was like, I was a single guy, I was a little bit younger. I wasn’t really looking for something substantial at that point in my life. I was just looking for a good time,’ he said.  ‘Now I’m at a stage in my life where I’m looking to share all of the great things going on in my life. I’m looking for that one life partner.’

“Though Double Shot At Love is significantly different from Jersey Shore, they couldn’t resist paying a few homages to the cult-classic reality show. From the looks of it, there’s no smush room — but there is a barber shop, because as any fan of Jersey Shore knows, one of the most important rules in the guido handbook is to always look fresh.

“‘When we’re on camera and performing a show for the world, I need a haircut every three days,’ Vinny said.

“Pauly D agreed. ‘I like to keep my hair on point — literally. But in real life, barbershops are where you have guy talk,’ he said.

“That necessity ended up working out for production as well, as they needed a place for the boys to deliberate on the mushy stuff, like who they’re interested in and who they’re sending home. So, they made the obvious choice — put a barber shop inside the house.

“‘Who we wanted to go home or who we were vibing with, all that went down in the barber shop every day,’ Pauly D said.

“And, because this is DJ Pauly D and Vinny we’re talking about, they decided to throw in a club too. Guess who was the house DJ?

“‘I was DJing, so for me, having a club in the house, that was the best part,’ Pauly D said. ‘A club and a barbershop. I was in my glory.’

“But the holy trinity of Shore-ness wouldn’t be complete without one final element — the infamous duck phone. Though these days using a landline is passé, it found its use as the vessel from which they’d receive challenges featured on each episode. 

‘“I had flashbacks of the Jersey Shore every single time that duck rang,’ Pauly D said of the phone’s tell-tale quack. ‘I swear I hear it in my sleep. That sound haunts me.’

“Vinny was less sentimental.

“‘I would’ve done without it. I’m trying to move on to an iPhone or something,’ he said. ‘But I can’t escape the duck phone. It’s everywhere with us. And you know what, it’s our little mascot. It keeps us humble. This is where we came from — a stupid, wooden, broken phone that never works.’

“Oh, and there’s one more homage to the Shore up their sleeves  — a resurgence of the Great Prank War of Seaside Heights.

Shore fans will remember that Pauly D and Vinny were crowned the Prank War Champions in Season 3. But this time around, instead of covering someone’s bed in various cheeses, they’ve got a subtler planned for the contestants — find out what it is during Thursday’s premiere.
